Narandurnung House

This rustic holiday home in Strath Creek makes the most of its expansive views of the surrounding mountains.

In the idyllic setting of Strath Creek lies a once-neglected barn, abandoned by its previous owner due to poor planning and lack of foresight. However, our client saw its potential and entrusted us with the task of transforming it into a stunning holiday home.

The barn's original design failed to take advantage of its breathtaking surroundings, with obstructive service zones and inadequate window placement. Nonetheless, we recognised the beauty of its gridded timber structure, which became a defining feature of our redesign.

Our approach involved peeling back the layers of the building to reveal its bare bones and highlighting its structural form. We then introduced a traditional Australian verandah, integrating it within the original grid, providing a seamless indoor-outdoor experience that allows for the appreciation of the stunning landscape. The verandah also offers optimal shading to the large glass walls, which provide unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains.

Internally, we lined the structure, making it airtight with new insulation and air sealing membranes, whilst applying high-performance windows and doors and a heat recovery ventilation system, ensuring ideal ventilation rates and continuous filtered air to each space. Despite implementing these changes, we were able to maintain the original character of the building by exposing the original structure.

Our eco-friendly approach extended to making the home largely off-grid, with an all-electric heating and cooling system, hot water system, and more, all powered by a large solar roof and battery on the adjacent garage. To ensure sustainability, we installed a 90,000-litre water tank with a filtration system and planted the site with drought-tolerant species, ensuring its resilience for years to come.

This barn's transformation is a testament to our commitment to creating unique, sustainable, and beautiful spaces that are in harmony with their environment. Our vision has breathed new life into this once-neglected building, elevating it to a world-class holiday home that harmoniously merges with the stunning Strath Creek landscape.
